Investigative Report: Angry Moms Still Fighting for Clozapine

One year ago today, on June 13th, 2025, the FDA’s clozapine REMS website was shut down and the department overseeing it was terminated. The clunky bureaucratic program that was never proven to save lives - and likely contributed to thousands of deaths - was finally dismantled.
Good riddance.
Award-winning journalist Alexandra “Ally” Markovich has published her investigative report on the history of The Angry Moms, the tragedies that inspired the movement, the “David and Goliath” moment when mothers took on the FDA on November 19, 2024, and our ongoing efforts to improve clozapine access.

The complexities of clozapine barriers are difficult to capture. Ally brilliantly conveys the plight of mothers fighting for access to the only effective treatment for their loved ones’ dangerous and disabling psychiatric conditions.
We had hoped the end of the clozapine REMS would usher in a new era for schizophrenia and Serious Mental Illness. But success stories remain too few, and deeply entrenched barriers persist. Lives and livelihoods continue to be lost, and families continue to suffer.
Our work is just getting started.
Thank you, Ally, for walking alongside us on this journey and for lending your exceptional journalistic talent to our cause. And thank you to the Arizona Center for Investigative Journalism for publishing our story.
